From 1953 – 1987, military personnel and their families that were stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina were exposed to contaminated water. Camp Lejeune’s tap water and bath water were contaminated with toxins up to 3400 times above recommended safety standards.
In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report detailing the long-term effects of those exposed to Camp Lejeune’s water. They found that consumers have a 10 percent increased risk of dying from cancer compared to those stationed at Camp Pendleton. In addition, those at Camp Lejeune had a 35 percent higher risk of kidney cancer and a 42 percent higher risk of liver cancer. They also had a 47 percent higher risk of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a 68 percent higher risk of multiple myeloma, and double the risk of ALS.
